Through the University of Sydney’s Central Clinical School it is possible to organise a medical student elective term at Melanoma Institute Australia. These terms need to be arranged conjointly with the clinical school and Melanoma Institute Australia. Availability is restricted by demand and resources.

Cost
It should be noted that elective placements under the Faculty of Medicine are for a maximum of eight weeks. (On some occasions placements will be accepted for a longer period but will incur a fee of Australian $500.00 for every week of the elective placement). Please note that we are only able to place elective students in their final or penultimate year of Medicine.
Once an application has been accepted, the hospital charges a non-refundable fee of A$500.00 for a period of four weeks and A$650.00 for a period of up to eight weeks in the form of a bank cheque drawn on an Australian bank, or by Visa Card/Mastercard. The fee is due 8 weeks after confirmation of the elective and if not received, will automatically cancel the placement
The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney charges an enrolment fee of A$100.00.
Policy on short-term overseas elective students
Short-term Elective students usually spend 4 to 8 weeks in one of our facilities. Their experience is truly elective in that it does not fulfill requirements in their own course for experience in a specific discipline (though they may have a preference for what area they work in).
For these students, the following conditions apply:
-
Acceptance by the Clinical Schools is at the discretion of the local Associate Dean, subject to load and other local considerations.
-
Most time should be spent in ward or clinic attachments, mostly in association with Year 3 students doing their Integrated Clinical Attachments. However, elective students may attend large-group teaching sessions such as lectures. Elective students would not normally participate in small group sessions such as Problem Based Learning tutorials, Community-Doctor or Personal and Professional Development theme sessions, or specifically organised Patient and Doctor tutorials around the bedside.
-
Internet access for the purpose of using email (via a web browser) is provided, but a local email account and password access to the USydMP website is not made available. Elective students may use computers in the Clinical School precinct or the Hospital Library.
-
Access to teaching sessions in the Clinical Skills Centre is at the discretion of the supervisor of the facility, and subject to space and availability of equipment.
-
Participation in clinical assessment is subject to the discretion of the Clinical School.
-
The Faculty will not sign the forms sometimes provided by students certifying that they have the same rights and responsibilities as students from this University.
-
Travel concessions are not available (by NSW Government policy), and meal and accommodation arrangements are subject to local rules and availability.
