Leon & Tamra Betts
Leon and Tamra Betts are from Brisbane, Australia. They joined our Speakers’ Hub program to raise awareness about sun safety and melanoma prevention and motivate change in attitudes and behaviour particularly amongst young Australians.
Leon and Tamra know too well the devastating impact of melanoma. In 2017 they lost their 25 year old daughter Emma to melanoma. Emma was diagnosed with melanoma when she was only 22 years old. She spent the next three years honestly and passionately sharing her story with the world via her blog Dear Melanoma.
“If Emma’s story doesn’t make you go and get a skin check, I’m not sure what will”, said Leon.
The couple has shared Emma’s heartbreaking story at numerous events, speaking from the heart about the need for greater awareness about sun safe behaviour. They are continuing Emma’s legacy of encouraging others to contribute to life saving research. Emma saw the phenomenal progress in treatment since her diagnosis, and wanted the momentum to continue to help others survive.
