Announcement from Melanoma Institute Australia
24 November 2016
After 18 years as Director of the Sydney Melanoma Unit and then Executive Director of Melanoma Institute Australia, Professor John Thompson AO will step down from the position at the end of 2016. Professor Thompson has long been a world-leader in melanoma research and has been pivotal in consolidating MIA’s position as an international leader in melanoma treatment and research. Under his guidance, the clinical and translational research output of MIA has increased exponentially in recent years, with MIA making major contributions to many important multicentre clinical trials and to the internationally accepted AJCC melanoma staging system. MIA is also supporting and leading revision of the Australian Melanoma Management Guidelines, with Professor Thompson as chairman of the working party that is undertaking the revision.
Professor Thompson will continue his academic and clinical work and so will remain connected with MIA when he passes on the baton of clinical and academic leadership of MIA to the new, conjoint Medical Directors Professor Richard Scolyer and Professor Georgina Long. He has worked closely with them both over many years and is confident that they will lead MIA with great distinction.
